At 5.30am Alicia gets up to prepare herself, her grandchildren and great grandchildren for the day. Before day break she irons their school clothing – bathes the children in a tin tub and prepares breakfast and sandwiches for school.
She then walks the youngest ones to play school and goes to the GAPA Centre where she spends the morning knitting hats to sell for 40 rand in order to buy extra food for her family.
Later she travels for two hours to visit her HIV positive daughter Phyllis, who’s seriously ill in hospital.
Alicia comes home to prepare the evening meal for the whole family of ten. Afterwards she gets the children ready for bed, which she shares with three of them.
