This is the little cottage where my great great grandmother once lived. It’s up on the hills in the Highlands of Scotland. The view is incredible, and it hasn’t changed much at all from the time she lived there in the late 1800’s. I only found out about it after filming for the BBC series.."Who Do You Think You Are"? last year. It was a total revelation, and profound experience in so many different ways. Now I can more fully appreciate what an extraordinary thing ancestry really is. Every single person comes from a lineage web that goes back to time immemorial. It sounds simplistic to say, but once you get the scale of it your paradigm gets shifted. It’s almost akin to cosmology or deep space. I think if more people had a sense of where we’ve come from, then we’d have a better appreciation for everything we have in the here and now.
